Jesse Tree: Mary and the Hope for a Future
Luke 1:26-38
"In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[c] the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her."
Activity Advent: Sugar cookies!
Last night, as I got my butt off the couch from blogging for my demanding sister in law (muahahah), I was on my way to bed. I got about 3 steps and then remembered I needed to make sugar cookie dough. Ugh. The whole time I thought of all the 'warnings' I was given while pregnant with my first child. "You just wait until you are putting your kids to bed and they tell you "Mom I need cookies for the bake sale tomorrow!"... Apparently I don't need school aged children for that. But what would Christmas be without sugar cookies? You know, since there aren't enough sugar filled things in this house already... But to be honest (if I were young I suppose I would write tbh... but I'm not... aaaanyways) the plan was to bake these in the morning, then make a bunch of colored icings in the afternoon and make them all beautiful...
But then my kids asked for a plain cookie. And loved it.
Ok, yes I know they would have thoroughly enjoyed painting themselves and my table with multi-colored icing BUT I am also willing to bet they never would have eaten the cookies all covered in nasty amounts of icing sugar. See, the thing with sugar cookies (I think) is that to want to consume that much sugar and have your teeth ache, they have to look irresistible; like pieces of art work. Now, I'm proud of every little scribble my kids make, I really truly am. But maybe we can link this back to the coloring episode I had a few days ago... Either way, mounds of mixed up colors of icing sugar pouring off a cookie make me want to yak instead of indulge. And I know my hub would say the same thing. And my kids subconsciously are the same. Well, somewhat. If they were painted pretty, they would just eat the pretty and leave the cookie...
SO long story short, we didn't ice them. I deprived my children of this joy. or something. But they sure ate a lot of cookies! And it's the first time I have seen my hub eat one too!
